Sleep and weight loss: the quiet multiplier
Short sleep raises hunger hormones and slows loss. Fixing sleep is weight treatment by another name.
The hormonal link
A week of five-hour nights measurably raises ghrelin (the hunger hormone) and lowers leptin (the fullness hormone). In studies, sleep-deprived dieters lose more muscle and less fat at identical calories. Sleep is not a lifestyle garnish on weight loss. It is part of the mechanism.
Sleep apnoea and weight
Loud snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing, and crushing daytime tiredness suggest sleep apnoea, common at higher weights, and itself a driver of further gain. Weight loss is one of the most effective apnoea treatments. Many people find symptoms resolve as weight falls. Mention snoring in your health check. Apnoea is also a qualifying weight-related condition at BMI 27 to 30.
The sleep protocol
- Consistent wake time, seven days a week, the anchor that sets the rest.
- Last meal 2 to 3 hours before bed (helps GLP-1 reflux too).
- Cool, dark, screen-free final hour.
- Caffeine none after midday. Alcohol near bedtime fragments sleep even in small amounts.
- If night sweats or anxiety drive the problem, treat the cause, for menopause, see the menopause guide.
Treatment and sleep
Most people sleep better as weight falls. A minority notice lighter sleep in the first weeks of a dose, usually transient. Nausea that wakes you at night deserves a check-in mention. Dose timing adjustments often fix it.
