What the BMI bands mean

BMIBandWeight loss treatment
Below 18.5UnderweightNot eligible, speak to your GP if you are losing weight without trying
18.5 to 24.9Healthy rangeNot eligible. These medicines are not for cosmetic slimming
25 to 26.9OverweightNot eligible on BMI alone
27 to 29.9OverweightEligible only with a weight-related condition, such as high blood pressure or prediabetes
30 and aboveLiving with obesityWithin the licensed range, subject to the full health check

Thresholds are about 2.5 points lower for people of South Asian, Chinese, Black African and African-Caribbean backgrounds, because health risks arrive earlier.

Where BMI falls short

BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. It does not distinguish muscle from fat, and it says nothing about where fat sits. Waist size adds useful context: more than 94 cm for men or 80 cm for women signals raised risk even at a moderate BMI.

Your prescriber looks at the whole picture, conditions, medicines, history, not a single number.

What to do with your result

If your BMI is 30 or above, or 27 and above with a condition, you can start the free health check. If you fall just below, focus on the fundamentals first, our guides on protein, sleep and movement apply whether or not medicine is involved.
