Life after GLP-1 treatment

The first year off treatment has its own terrain, returning appetite, a changing identity, and questions nobody warned you about. A plain map.

Appetite in month one and month six

Appetite returns gradually over 4 to 6 weeks after your last dose. Most people describe not a flood but a rising background hum, snacks becoming interesting again, portions creeping. By month three, the new normal is established: your habits now do the work the medicine did. People who built structure during maintenance describe this as manageable. People who white-knuckle it describe month two as the hardest.

The identity shift

Losing 15 to 20% of your body weight changes how you move through the world, clothes, compliments, energy, sometimes relationships. Some people grieve the person they were. Others struggle with attention they never asked for. Both are normal. If food was how you coped with feelings, new coping routes need building, the emotional eating guide is the place to start.

The body questions

Loose skin depends on how much you lost, your age, and how fast it came off, slow loss and muscle building reduce it, and significant laxity is a surgical conversation, not a cream. Hair shedding (telogen effluvium) peaks around months 3 to 6 of rapid loss and regrows, see the hair loss guide. Strength lost during dieting is rebuildable, and rebuilding it is maintenance's highest-leverage project.

Social life and eating out

Restaurant portions will look enormous forever now. That is not you being difficult, that is recalibrated appetite meeting an oversized food environment. Practical norms that help: starter-as-main, half-portions requested without apology, and deciding about dessert after the main, not before.

Long-term monitoring

After discharge from active maintenance, the safety net stays: a standing agreement that a 2 to 3 kg drift triggers a check-in, and an annual review of weight, blood pressure and, if relevant, blood sugar with your GP. Weight management is a long game, and long games need referees.
